INFORMATION QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Welcome to the Vortex Air Hose knowledge and support hub. Whether you are an owner-operator replacing a single Suzi line or a fleet manager sourcing bulk 3-in-1 wrapped assemblies, we have compiled answers to our most common technical, compliance, and ordering questions.

Select a category below or scroll through to find the details you need:

1. Product Compliance & Technical Standards

Are your air brake hose assemblies certified under DOT FMVSS 106 and SAE J1402?

Yes. All rubber air brake hose assemblies meet SAE J1402 Type A specifications and DOT FMVSS 106 (49 CFR 571.106) requirements. End fittings are permanently swaged and stamped with the required DOT identifier bands.

What is the difference between SAE J1402 rubber hose and SAE J844 nylon tubing?

SAE J1402 covers reinforced rubber hose designed for flexible tractor-to-trailer air connections (gladhead jump lines). SAE J844 covers rigid or coiled nylon tubing used for internal chassis frame routing, air brake valves, and auxiliary system air lines.

Do your 3-in-1 combo wraps meet SAE J560 electrical standards?

Yes. The 7-way power cable built into our 3-in-1 air and electrical combo wraps complies with SAE J560 and SAE J2394 specs for standard heavy-duty ABS power transmission, featuring solid zinc die-cast or molded plugs.

What working pressure and burst pressure ratings do Vortex air brake hoses adhere to?

All Vortex SAE J1402 rubber air brake hoses and SAE J844 nylon coil assemblies are engineered for a maximum working pressure of 150 PSI, fully satisfying standard commercial tractor-trailer air compressor cut-out thresholds (120–135 PSI). Per DOT FMVSS 106 guidelines, our assemblies maintain a minimum burst pressure threshold of 900 PSI at room temperature.

What is the certified operating temperature range for Vortex EPDM rubber and PA12 nylon air lines?

Our reinforced EPDM synthetic rubber lines and virgin PA12 thermal-set nylon coiled lines are certified for continuous operating temperatures ranging from -40°F to +200°F (-40°C to +93°C). The materials maintain structural elasticity and resist cracking or thermal embrittlement in sub-zero winter conditions.

What fitting thread sizes and swivel types are standard on your air brake assemblies?

Standard assemblies feature 1/2″ NPT male solid brass fittings on both ends, with heavy-duty swivel fittings on at least one end to prevent line twisting during installation. Select assemblies for tractor protection valves or localized manifold connections utilize 3/8″ NPT or custom brass adapters.

Are field splices or compression fittings DOT-compliant for repairing tractor-to-trailer jump lines?

No. Under DOT FMVSS 106 and CVSA inspection criteria, temporary brass compression splices, hose clamps, or push-to-connect field repairs are strictly prohibited on flexible tractor-to-trailer (gladhead) jumper lines. Damaged jumper lines must be replaced with a factory-swaged, DOT-stamped hose assembly to remain road-legal.

Why is an SAE J2394 green cable required for ABS-equipped trailers instead of a standard 7-way cord

SAE J2394 specifies a heavy-duty green jacketing housing a dedicated 10-gauge auxiliary wire (Pin 7) alongside 12-gauge lighting wires and an 8-gauge ground wire. This gauge configuration guarantees continuous 12V high-amperage power transmission to trailer Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) electronic control units without voltage drops that trigger dash warning lights.

Are Red and Blue glad hands mechanically keyed to prevent cross-coupling?

Yes. Emergency (Red / Supply) and Service (Blue / Control) glad hands feature polarized, polarity-keyed casting frames. This mechanical keying prevents cross-coupling the Emergency line to the Service port, eliminating the risk of accidental trailer spring-brake release or loss of service brake control.

Does enclosing air and electrical lines in a 3-in-1 spiral wrap void DOT FMVSS 106 compliance?

No. Protective heavy-duty poly spiral wrap or woven fabric sleeves protect lines against inter-line chafing and UV degradation. As long as the individual SAE J1402 rubber lines contained within the bundle carry their original factory-stamped DOT identification bands near the end fittings, the assembly remains 100% compliant.

How do Extended Long-Tail coiled air lines help prevent DOT deck-dragging violations?

Extended Long-Tail coils feature 12-inch to 40-inch straight pigtail leads at the tractor connection end. These extended leads absorb mechanical articulation strain during sharp 90-degree turns, preventing the coil turns from over-stretching, losing their memory, or sagging onto the cat-walk or deck plate.

Are stainless steel spring guards mandatory on swaged air brake hose ends?

While spring guards are not explicitly mandated by FMVSS 106, SAE J1402 strongly recommends strain relief at all end fittings. Vortex installs heavy-gauge stainless steel spring guards on swaged connections to distribute bending stresses away from the brass ferrule joint, preventing premature fatigue fractures.

How do Vortex air line materials handle exposure to road salt, magnesium chloride, and fuel spray?

Vortex rubber jackets are formulated with high-grade EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer), and our coiled lines use 100% virgin PA12 nylon polymer. Both compounds provide chemical resistance against road de-icers (calcium/magnesium chloride), diesel fuel, battery acid, hydraulic fluid, and UV radiation.

Are anodized aluminum glad hand extension handles (grips) DOT-compliant?

Yes. Anodized aluminum extension grips attach between the 1/2″ NPT hose swivel and the glad hand body without restricting airflow internal diameter. They are fully compliant with FMVSS 106 flow-rate rules and provide ergonomic leverage to reduce strain on brass threads during coupling.

What quality control testing is performed on Vortex factory-swaged hose assemblies before shipping?

Every factory-swaged hose assembly undergoes 100% automated hydrostatic proof testing to verify zero leakage at the ferrule interface. Representative batch samples undergo destructive tensile pull-testing (exceeding the FMVSS 106 minimum 325 lbs pull-off requirement) and cold-bend testing down to -40°F.
